UPDATE 1

I have run the amp now through a Mac Book Pro. I also got a friend over for a second opinion.

First of all, I am liking this amp a lot more now that I have had it for a while... no where near enough hours for burn in yet though. The big advantage with the amp is the Crossfeeder. My friend feels that the funciton alone is worth purchasing the amp. I personally feel that crossfeed is excellent, but it is obviously not the ulitmate solution. The biggest advantage of this feature is found in well produced music (such as Opeth) and well recorded live performances. Overall it gives a "relaxed" feel to the music and brings the soundstage forward (a nice thing for the 595's that are very "up front")

I still feel that the bass is not as powerful as I would like. This could be a combination of this amp with the 595's, but I have heard more bass coming from my friend's Marantz amp through these cans, so I know the headphones can do it. After playing with the EQ in Itunes you can get the bass to come out more and this amp can really deliver (even when you go a little overboard with the bass). This of course is getting away from the point of the amp, which is to stay true to the signal that it is fed, and in this reguard I feel this little baby holds it's own.

So let's recap.

For US$ 270 you get:
- A very well built and beautiful looking unit.
- Crossfeed (for that relaxed sound)
- More accuracy in the music (but only a little more)
- A more spacious sound (can hear different instruments better)
- A great boost to your sound after some EQ.
- A neutral and truthful sound
- A great companion for your 595's

I think it's worth it.

Hello AJ!

Thank's for the review! It's nice to read someone else's thoughts of the amp (which i own also). There's so little about this particular amp here in head-fi. Despite the fact that the Headfive is much like, it's a different amp (for example there's two more input caps in the Arietta..this example because i haven't heard the Headfive).

I suggest you to listen with another source also, cause i think your SB Live is lacking the bass..not the amp. I listened first with LG dvd-player and now i have (Oppo) BBK dvd-player as my source and i can say that i have had those "wow" feelings nowadayseggosmile.gif I have also those Senns and i can say that they are quite light with the lower freqs.

EDIT: Actually the caps I was talking about are not input caps but main power caps..

Cheers, thanks for the input. My computer is about to get changed to a Mac Book Pro and hopefully then I will get myself a more serious DAC. I am comparing my experience with my friend's Marantz stack, from which the 595's really come alive. he he... kiss goodbye my wallet. biggrin.gif

I'd like to point out a bit as what you are describing is the sound of hd595 (took me a while to figure that out while using it). =] Although, your experience is very similar to mine using hd595 out of porta corda, and the amps are quite similar, cheers, good writing.

Assuming the arietta is the same as the headfive, then paired with it, the HD580 sounds "ok" and the HD595 sounds "great."
