Happy-Go-Lucky Me: The Paul Evans Songbook Review

by James Christopher Monger AMG

Brill Building tunesmith Paul Evans' impressive body of work receives deluxe treatment on the excellent Happy-Go-Lucky Me: The Paul Evans Songbook. A good anthology plays like a time line, and U.K. label Castle Music has done a fine job collecting the hits, demos, and previously unissued tracks from his 50-year career. His only Top 20 hits as a performer, "Seven Little Girls," "Midnight Special," and the irresistible "Happy-Go-Lucky Me," reside among songs penned for other artists, like Bobby Vinton's "Roses Are Red (My Love)" and the Ray Coniff Singers' wonderfully goofy "Happiness Is," all performed by Evans. Also featured is a 1998 autobiographical track called "I Was a Part of the 50's" and an interview by writer/producer Stuart Colman.

PAUL EVANS' BIOGRAPHY

LIFE BEFORE "SEVEN LITTLE GIRLS" (by Paul)

I was born in Queens, New York City, on March 5, 1938. My entire family was musically inclined. Family legend has my father selling his flute to buy me my first guitar. My mother taught and played the piano professionally.

My oldest sister, Estelle, taught me how to play the guitar. She was into folk music and was in demand at hootenannies. My sister, Marilyn, plays the piano in clubs and at private parties. (Name the song and Marilyn will play it for you.) My daughter, Eden, lives in the New York area with her beautiful daughter, Ashley.

My wife, Susan, and I met on a blind date. (A mutual friend introduced her to the writer after Susan heard Elvis' "The Next Step Is Love" on a juke box.) Susan is my "Web Master" and helps design these pages. She also created two of my You Tube videos: "Happy Birthday, America" and my "Career" video.

I went to PS 136 and then Andrew Jackson High School, where I produced and performed in our high school shows. At Columbia University, which I went to on a scholarship, I had a radio show which featured folk music.

I left my engineering scholarship behind to pursue a career in the record business. While I waited for a hit, I sang at local clubs and spent a year - on and off - as the ship's singer on the beautiful SS France.

Susan and I currently live in Manhattan, in New York City.

There you have it. Twenty years of my life in a couple of paragraphs!

RECORDING ARTIST

Paul has spent the major portion of his life "on the charts". From his 1960's Guaranteed Records hits: "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat", "Midnight Special", "Happy-Go-Lucky Me" and "Hushabye, Little Guitar" to his 1979 Spring Records hit: "Hello, This Is Joannie" (Number 4 on the English "Pop" charts, Top 40 on Billboard's Country charts.)

In 1996 his own recording of "Willie's Sung With Everyone (But Me)" was released on Willie Nelson's "22 Legendary Duets" CD.

A retrospective CD of Paul's hits, "Paul Evans - the Fabulous Teens and Beyond " was released on Ace Records in the UK in 1995.

Another retrospective CD, "I Was a Part of the 50's" was released on S-Star Records in the US in 1998.

Paul's recording of "Happy-Go-Lucky Me" is the theme of John Waters' cult classic, "Pecker", released in late September, 1998.

Paul's CD, "Roses Are Red, My Love", finally gave Paul a chance to record his hit songs, "When" and "Roses Are Red (My Love)".

In addition to his hit songs, Sanctuary Records' "Happy Go Lucky Me - The Paul Evans Songbook", includes some previously unreleased RCA masters and Paul's original 50s and 60s hit song demos for Elvis, Johnny Tillotson, Pat Boone and Ray Conniff. It also includes two demos that were being held for Elvis at the time of his death.

STUDIO and BACKGROUND SINGER

Paul has soloed on many a commercial "jingle" and has been seen and heard on the "David Letterman Show", "As the World Turns", "Guiding Light" and "All My Children". His voice can be heard in the Woody Allen films, "Mighty Aphrodite" and "Everyone Says I Love You".

WRITER

Paul has written hits for himself as well as for Bobby Vinton (the classic, "Roses Are Red, My Love" which was featured in the hit movie, "Good Fellas"), the Kalin Twins ("When"), Elvis Presley ("Something Blue", "I Gotta Know" and more), as well as songs for Jackie Wilson, LaVern Baker, The Mello Kings, Frankie Lymon, Fabian, the Coasters, Pat Boone, and Reba McEntire. He has also written his share of commercial "jingles", music for industrials and movies and various themes heard on Network television (including the original "CBS This Morning" theme).

PRODUCER

Paul has produced music tracks for recordings, industrials, jingles and television.

CURRENT PERFORMER

After a lifetime in the New York City recording studios and touring with his vocal jazz quintet, Group 5ive, Paul is back on the Oldies circuit, performing the hit songs that he took to the charts as a singer and/or writer.
But Paul hasn't turned his back on recording.
"Happy Birthday, America", a feel good tribute to America's beginnings on FSA Records, is released every year in honor of Independence Day with an accompanying video slide show. "Santa's Stuck Up In The Chimney", another Paul Evans' feel good holiday recording, is released annually for the Christmas Holiday Season. An animated version has accompanied the song starting with the 2007 holiday season.

FSA Records hopes to make these two recordings perennial holiday favorites.

Paul Evans (born March 5, 1938)[1] is an American rock and roll singer and songwriter, who was most prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. As a performer, he had hits with the songs "Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat" (his biggest hit, recorded with The Curls), reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959), "Midnight Special" and "Happy-Go-Lucky Me".

Evans had a sizeable hit in the UK and Australia in 1978–79 with the morbid country song "Hello, This Is Joanie" (as it was titled on the New Zealand pressing released by Polydor Records) or, as it was known on a Spring Records release, "Hello, This is Joannie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song)".[1][2] In a 2004 interview Evans revealed that the voice of Joannie was provided by country artist Lea Jane Berinati.[3]

Evans also had minor hits with "After the Hurricane" which hit No.2 on April 8, 1961 on Vancouver's CFUN chart, and "Feelin' No Pain" which hit No.23 on Canadian CHUM charts.

"Happy-Go-Lucky Me" has been featured in the John Waters' filmPecker,[1] and episode #3.10 of the comedy television program Scrubs. In 2014, the song has been included in advertisements for the video game Clash of Clans.[citation needed] The song was also featured in the pilot episode of the 2016 Hulu miniseries 11.22.63.

Songwriter[edit]

As a songwriter Evans' songs were performed by numerous performers, including Elvis PresleyJimmy Dean and Pat Boone. His most successful songs were "Roses Are Red (My Love)", which was a number one hit for Bobby Vinton in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100; and by Ronnie Carroll in the UK reaching no. 3 in 1962; and "When" a chart topper in the UK Singles Chart and #5 in the U.S. for The Kalin Twins.[1]

Recordings[edit]

With Larry Kusik,[4] Evans wrote "Live Young"[5] for the 1963 Warner Brothers spring break movie Palm Springs Weekend.[6] Evans' songs have also been recorded by Jackie WilsonFrankie LymonFabianthe Coasters, and more recently by Reba McEntire. His work has also been used in films and as the theme music for CBS This Morning.[1]

Autobiography[edit]

Although he has written many song lyrics, Happy Go Lucky Me: A Lifetime of Music was published in 2021 by McNidder and Grace and is his first book. His autobiography describes his journey from getting his start in the music business, becoming part of the Brill's songwriting community and the sixty-three music-filled years that followed.

Personal life[edit]

Paul lives in New York in his City apartment with his second wife Susan, who he has been married to since 1975.
