Beware of whiplash on this one: after opening with a sweetly melodic slice of soul-flavored retro rock, Shining Path jumps without warning into high-octane punky speed metal and pretty much stays there for the duration. Bassist Jonas Hellborg, drummer Anders Johansson, keyboardist Jens Johansson, and singer Gary Cooper lay down a fearsome barrage -- the death metal growl of "Kiss of Death" is followed not long after by the squeal of "Kill." While all of it is bracing and frankly virtuosic, none of it really comes together in a truly impressive way until the very last track, a tight, harsh, and beautifully controlled slab of aggression called "The End." Part of what makes that piece work so well is that it's an instrumental. As far as lyrics are concerned, the terrorist-glorifying band name and the Catholic-bashing cover art give you a good idea of what to expect: half-baked Marxism ("Some people work and become wealthy/Others do the same and remain poor/Don't trust ways/They change") and facile existentialism ("Wrath of Dog"). Recommended with reservations. (Interesting note: there is no guitarist credited, and yet it sure sounds like there is one ripping things up on several tracks. If this is Hellborg, then he's an even more amazing bassist than originally thought.)
