Many well-known innovations and discoveries, both modern and historical, have Swedish origins. This book presents technical products and methods which represented a sufficiently high degree of innovation to be granted patents and which went on to achieve great commercial success. As a result, many of these innovations have since become familiar household names, whereas others have played an important role in the business sector. Author Kjell Sedig provides us with a valuable insight into some of the more recent Swedish innovations that have won international acclaim. His account also takes us back to the days of Sweden's “Universal Geniuses” and their discoveries and inventions. Third, revised edition.

(May 21, 2004) The newest exposition at Bellas Artes Museum, “Improving Life: The Design of Swedish Innovations” entertains the viewer with 60 or so creative inventions and surprising facts, while also raising important questions regarding the relationship between culture, technology, and design.  The curator, Gabriela del Valle Lopez, invites the visitor to view the creations as expressions of the Swedish way of using culture and technology to create a better, more beautiful everyday life.

While a portable pee-sack (the liquid turns to gel and a special design permits women to relieve themselves standing up) may not fit within the conventional definition of beautiful, last Sunday it held viewers attention longer than the classical marble sculpture standing just a few feet away (part of the permanent exhibit). 

There are high-tech gismos such as the Digital Scanner Pen, a handheld scanner that can pull excerpts from textbooks. The are objects that carefully blend function with aesthetics such as “Boob” clothes for breastfeeding mothers, a sleek wrap arrangement that allows women to be simultaneously discrete, comfortable, and stylish. There are innovations that help people deal with disasters: a paper thin disposable sleeping sack, which can later be burned without damaging the environment. 

The exhibit also includes information regarding commonplace objects. Who knew that the zipper we use today exists thanks to Swedish industrialist Giden Sundback who, in 1914, worked out the kinks that had been plaguing zipper-inventors for over a century?

The highlight of the exhibit for many is Brainball – a game which looks like air hockey from afar. Upon closer inspection, however, one sees that the movement of the ball is powered by brain activity. Brave individuals can wait their turn and connect themselves to the board. A computer will track their Alpha and Theta levels: the signals the brain generates when one is calm and relaxed. The more relaxed a player is, the faster his or her ball will roll into the goal. When I was there, the champion was a 5 year old boy who smiled placidly as adult after nervous adult strapped in and lost.

As you pass through the exhibit, think about how the world would change if every innovation you see was as widespread as the zipper. Even if your conclusion is “for the worse,” you have to admit it is quite impressive that a country of 9 million inhabitants can be credited for such a wide array of inventions.
