Who'd have thought that the chilly, spacey
faux-glam Mechanical Animals sound
would translate so well into rip-roaring li-
ve performances such as the ones captu-
red on The Last Tour On Earth? As things
go, the live contexts adds some steel to
the Mechanical Animals material, whilst
the band's years of experience adds new
nuances to old material from Antichrist Su-
perstar, Smells Like Children and Portrait

of an American Family. The set-list for the
album is superb to the point where it flows
more or less like a full concert and enough
of Manson's interactions with the crowd
are preserved to underscore just what a
brilliantly rabble-rousing and exciting front-
man he was at his prime.

The Last Tour on Earth re-creates that ill-
fated roadshow by splicing together tracks
recorded everywhere from Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, to Grand Rapids, Michigan. The al-
bum lacks the immediacy of a one-stop
concert, but it does capture Manson's ini-
mitable talent for spectacle. His evange-
list-meets-carny-barker spiels about Gawd
rawk and muthafuckin' cops are hilarious
and the sound quality is appropriately hu-
ge on lavish numbers such as "Antichrist
Superstar," "The Dope Show" and the Bo-
wie-esque "Great Big White World." This
isn't exactly the MC5's Kick Out the Jams
and you don't get to see Manson bare his
bottom, but it's still good, dirty fun.
