I've had this DVD fire for a few years now and I love getting it out, especially during the holiday season. It's always a topic of conversation! It has 9 different 'fires' to choose from, and I put that in quotes, because one of them is actually candles. Most of the fireplaces are pretty straightforward just pictures of the fire surround and hearth, sometimes with fireplace tools also on screen. One of the fires is especially themed for Christmas with stockings, a tree, and a train chugging around the base. There's also a psychedelic fire which does weird effects, which I nearly never use, but I could imagine would be of interest too teenagers and college/uni students. The only other fire not in a fireplace is a campfire, which I quite like to put on for cool summer evenings.
There are 4 choices of audio, though this is I think where the dvd let's itself down. The first is the most obvious 'au naturale', which is what it sounds like....the sound of the fire. For the campfire it does include an outdoor evening soundtrack, complete with owls hooting, but not so often that you tire of it quickly. However, they didn't make the effort to record something different for the candles...so you get the sound of a roaring fire with a mismatched visual...a bit odd, but to be honest I don't use the candles much anyway.
The other three seetings 'classical heat', 'yuletide splendor', and 'max relax' are all a bit cheesy (I suspect because the rights to better music were too expensive), but are good for a laugh now and then. Classical heat being classical music, yuletide splendor being Christmas songs, and max relax being 'jazzy-ish' music.
Finally, you have the option to choose how the fire loops (all of the tracks aren't very long...ranging from a few minutes to maybe about 15?) You can play the fire once and return...which kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion, unless you just want to show someone this is a fairly useless feature. The second is to loop the fire while playing the same music (I find this one is the one I use almost exclusively). And the third is to loop the fire and cycle through all music (again I don't use this one much).
I gave this DVD 4 stars, because overall it does what it says on the tin. You do get a fairly decent selection of fires, and audio selections, if not a little cheesy. In future I think they could improve this by nixing the candles and psychedelic fire and adding some more wintery scenes with snow falling outside a window, or maybe wild animals in the winter (squirrels, cardinals etc.) and spending a little more time/money on the 'music' tracks, but for the most part, I can't fault it!
