From Amazon.com:
"Teach Yourself Finnish by A. H. Whitney is in the old format of TY books, which concentrate on the grammar and vocabulary and less on conversation than the newer editions. Finnish is non-Indo-European language of the Finno group of the Uralic family of languages. It is most closely related to Estonian and less to Hungarian, though all three make up one group. It borrows heavily from the system of grammatical forms in Indic and European languages but with greater development. Because Finnish is not an IE language, few words will have a recognizable spelling for the new student. But you will find it helpful that the language uses the Roman alphabet unlike many other languages outside the IE linguistic family. With a language like Finnish, which has one of the most elaborate grammatical developments of any language spoken in Europe, the student needs to focus on the grammatical forms and not get sidetracked with learning conversational idioms, and this book focuses on that necessary feature. Nouns are especially developed in Finnish. With the usual twenty-two forms to learn with each Finnish noun, a self-teaching book can easily overwhelm an unsuspecting new learner. But Professor Whitney has balanced each of the twenty chapters with noun and verb topics so that the student may be challenged but never halted in the learning process because there is too much to memorize. Each chapter ends with a grammatical and a reading exercise, with the answers and translations in the back of the book. Dr. Whitney has put forth special effort to integrating the learning of stems in the lessons on nouns and verbs. This greatly increases the efficiency of the learning process, and most students find this very helpful in later sight reading and recognition parsing. With mastery of the material in Whitney's TY Finnish, the novice can quickly begin reading periodical literature and easier fiction, and even parts of the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala. I recommend the purchase of the hardbound edition because you will probably want to keep this in your home language library for future reference in years to come. This little book may become the first step in a series of stepping stones to learning and mastering a fascinating language and a gateway to entering a rich and modern culture."
