Huom! Tässä litografissa käytettiin painossa 31 värikertaa (The Black Box, Chicagossa), kun normaalisti oli 10-14. + päälle helmiäispinta; on upea lopputulos!

John Garvin gave Barks the idea for doing a painting of the ducks treasure hunting underwater, during one of his many visits to Barks' home and studio to discuss painting.
The basic idea derived from Barks' 1967 adventure story U$68 Hall of the Mermaid Queen. The image to the left shows one of his initial paste-up paper and vellum sketches made for the front cover. Although the idea was not used in the end it holds a significant idea featuring details on top of the nephews' special helmets, which Barks made room for in his painting. The story's helmets ended up looking rather different.
One day when Barks had lunch in a restaurant he noticed the establishment's fish tank filled with colourful, tropical fish, some of which he used in the painting.
Barks: "Paintings just grew from no story in particular, except possibly 'Hall of the Mermaid Queen'. The treasure-hunting ducks in Davey Jones' locker under the sea about to be ousted by angry mermaids."

The perhaps most easily noticeable alteration between the preliminary and the finished painting is that Barks decided to add a heavy vortex effect in the water. He was aware that such a bubble effect could not originate from the ducks, but he felt that the vortex would add to a light and positive feeling of movement.

Barks had severe doubts about the titling of his artwork. In the initial stage he wished to call it In Davy Jones' Locker, but this was changed to Makings of a Fish Story (without The in front). Still, that must have seemed a little vague to the otherwise very inventive Barks, so he later tried to have the title changed to No One Will Ever Believe This - but to no avail.

Buff info: When any artist render his perception of how a mermaid/merman look he almost always makes a crucial mistake! It is generally agreed upon that merpersons have a scaly fishtail, but it is depicted wrongly; any fishtail is standing upright (vertically) thus propelling the animal by moving its tail from left to right, but when it comes to merpersons the artists usually render the tail in the horizontal position thus moving the tail up and down. This is a feature only seen in marine mammals such as whales and porpoises. Pay attention to Barks' version!
