Inspired by the international success of the Dollars trilogy, and dedicated to director Sergio Leone, Cemetery Without Crosses offers a Gallic spin on the Spaghetti Western formula thanks to its star and creator, Robert Hossein (best-known to English-speaking audiences for his role in Jules Dassin s Rififi).

After her husband is lynched by bandits, Michèle Mercier (Mario Bava's Black Sabbath) seeks revenge and turns to an old friend, played by Hossein, for help. A solitary figure who lives in a ghost town and dons a single black glove before each gunfight, Hossein is initially reluctant but soon infiltrates the widow s enemies to force a showdown.

Cemetery Without Crosses is a darker breed of Western, bleak and melancholy in tone amid the explosive set pieces. It also boasts an outstanding score by composer André Hossein (father of Robert) and the catchiest of themes, sung by cult figure Scott Walker.

This late 60's French/Italian co-production was a personal project for star Robert Hossein, who co-wrote, starred and directed. He plays a mysterious, solitary gunman named Manuel, who always wears a single black glove before using his gun. Having renounced violence, he resides in an abandoned ghost town, where he is approached by Maria Caine, (lovely Michele Mercier), a woman from his past, whose husband has been hanged by a rival family. Initially reluctant, Manuel decides to help Maria in her plan of revenge. While the plot may be run-of-the-mill and simplistic, it's the imaginative and creative touches which elevate this well-paced western several notches above the ordinary. Notice the sparse dialogue initially between the two central characters when they first meet. Obviously there's history there. Little or nothing is said of their past relationship to one another. It's the little information which Hossein puts in, like an old photograph, which gradually alludes to what these people are to each other. Personally, I really enjoyed this rather unique and intriguing film. Hossein's fateful and tragic central figure is a stand out, as is the film's rousing score. I suspect this may not be to everyone's taste, but if you are into slow, methodical, character-driven westerns, this rivals some of the better known films in this genre. When this release was announced by Amazon, I immediately pre-ordered it, anticipating something different, out-of-the-ordinary. It is both those and more. My top purchase of the year, I suspect. Highly recommended.
Despite the print having a little, minor damage, the Blu Ray's 1080p transfer from a 2K restoration is impressive in it's original aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Arrow are certainly to be thanked for releasing this compelling, lesser-known but minor gem.
