Drama from first-time director J.P. Schaefer based around the murder of John Lennon in 1980. Following the events leading up to the moment Mark David Chapman (played by Jared Leto) shot the legendary singer five times in the back, the film's title is a play on JD Salinger's classic novel 'The Catcher in the Rye', which ends on chapter 26. Chapman (Jared Leto) related and modelled his life after the book's main character Holden Caulfield, and it was the book he held onto at the time he shot Lennon. Chapman claimed the book held the reasons behind the heinous act.

Leto's portrayal of Mark David Chapman is easily the greatest performance (yet) of his career. The film is a fantastic character study of Chapman which also serves to provide an accurate retelling of the events preceding John Lennon's assassination. Add to that an engrossing original soundtrack and you get a truly special film here. The scriptwriters did an excellent job of integrating dialogue from 'The Catcher in the Rye' into Chapman's on-screen persona, as the line blurs between him and Holden Caulfield (just as he always intended it to do). You can tell the writers really did their homework, as several real life details (such as Chapman's inscription into his copy of the book) are shown on-screen.

Lindsay Lohan also does a stellar job in her supporting role as Jude, the real-life Beatles fan who Chapman interacted with during his wait outside the Dakota building. She really serves as the audience's representation, being able to pick up on that 'something's not quite right here' vibe whenever she's on-screen with Chapman. It's subtle and very well done - Leto and Lohan complement each other very well. Visually the movie is quite dark, but this is not a bad thing and I suspect it was a stylistic choice. It might have been nice to see more of a focus on Chapman's life prior to his arrival in New York City in December 1980, but I appreciate that the film wanted to place a focus on the days immediately preceding John Lennon's assassination.

I've watched this film several times over now and I still can't think of a single serious fault with it. It manages to deliver an enthralling, morbid drama while also remaining historically accurate - that is a serious accomplishment! Even though his part is very minor, the guy who imitates John Lennon's voice also does a spot-on job! Sadly I feel this film is quite underappreciated (especially by some who may have chosen to condemn it without actually viewing it). If you are on the fence about watching it out of the fear that it will glorify Mark David Chapman - don't be. Chapman's portrayal is a realistic one; he is shown as he was (and probably still is): a sad, chubby, envious, mentally ill loner who sought to cheat his way to the limelight.
