This, one of Steve McQueen's lesser known films, is well worth a watch. McQueen is almost unrecognizable in this black and white war drama that appeared around the same time as Pork Chop Hill and Attack. B&w movies are not works to be scoffed at. Directed with a very tight and noteably talented direction by the late Don Sigel it is based on an actual incident on the Siegfried Line in late 1944/early 1945 when a group of six American GIs are required to defend a small section of the line against overwhelming numbers. McQueen plays Reese, a PFC demoted from NCO rank, battle hardened, war weary, embittered, tough and unsmiling, it is easy to see why he went on to greater things. In the company of Bob Newhart, Fess Parker of 'Davy Crockett' fame and Bobby Darin, the film seems to have disappeared unappreciated into the past. In the light of McQueen's later development of his persona in films like The Great Escape and Bullit it is easy to see why. But in some senses the character of Reese is far more interesting, indicating that McQueen had far greater range than many people appreciate, as McQueen later tried to demonstrate in 'An Enemy of the People'. Hugely underrated but an absolute gem for McQueen fans, it is only in the final scene as he stumbles towards a pillbox that we see a recognisable McQueen. Recommended.
