The westerns of the 1940's are some of the most enjoyable of this genre. Western Union is no exception. Based on the Zane Grey novel of the same name, the plot may differ from the original novel but what remains is still a very good movie.
Randolph Scott plays Vance Shaw a reformed outlaw who gets a job with "Western Union" the company that is to bring the telegraph lines out west during the American Civil War. However hostile Indians and Outlaws working for the Confederacy stand in their way. What follows is a highly entertaining and enjoyable movie as Western Union makes its way with ample humour when needed, (the westerns of this decade always managed to include light hearted material despite the seriousness of the story).
The second of Fritz Lang's three westerns it has a real Zane Grey atmosphere and also contains a fine cast with many familiar faces to those familiar with these old movies. Joining Randolph Scott and Robert Young are John Carradine, Chill Wills and Barton Maclane. Chief John Big Tree also makes an appearance as Spotted Horse.
A western movie should also be judged on its realism and many of the characters are bearded or have stubble and wear worn and dusty clothes similar to those of the 1860's.
This is a hugely enjoyable picture and has even been taken off by Sergio Leone. Don't believe me? Watch the start of "For a Few Dollars More" when Clint Eastwood's character arrives in the saloon and then watch the end of "Western Union" in the scene in the barber's.
