Hendrix recorded most of the songs at his new Electric Lady Studios in New York City with former Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox, his regular backing for the final six months. All of the songs had been released previously on Hendrix's first posthumous albums The Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge, and War Heroes; Cry of Love appears here in its entirety but within a different running order. 

This was Jimi in 1970, making a concept album on his own terms, in his own studio, continuing to explore the musical edges and advancing beyond them. The genius of Hendrix is on full display as he laid guitar upon guitar, made drum tracks, ran bass through fuzz, and called in a host of great musicians to help him then make the album he'd always wanted to create. Sadly, he died in England in September of 1970 before he could hurry to his new home in New York, his studio, to finish making the masterpiece.

Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge were released posthumously, parts of a whole, but this album is an attempt to come as close as possible to the album Jimi envisioned, remastered with loving care by some old mates and, as usual, yet another new direction for Hendrix.
