Multi talented musician and singer Michael Voss of Casanova and Mad Max fame had always wanted to work on a metal album with ex-Crystal Ball vocalist Mark Sweeney. After Voss had worked on Sweeny’s second solo album, they decided to put together a project that would feature as many of the world’s best rock singers and performers as possible and Wolfpakk is the end result.

So sitting down together they wrote eleven metal songs and when this was done, the task of calling everyone in their phonebooks to get them help, play and sing on them began. Enter Jeff Scott Soto, Paul Shortino, Tony Martin, Rob Rock, Mark Boals, Paul DiAnno, Tommy Denander, Olaf Lenk, Torsten Koehne, Tony Franklin and Alessandro Delvecchio, to name but a few who took part in the recording sessions.

And with a pedigree line up like this one, thank goodness that the songs on ‘Wolfpakk’ stand up to close scrutiny. ‘Slam Down The Hammer’ with Paul Shortino on vocals reminded me of Icon or Quiet Riot, ‘Ride The Bullet’ has a Gotthard, Shakra vibe running through its guitar riff, as does the track ‘Sirens’ which also brought to mind Edguy.One song that could have been taken off a Crystal Ball album then crossed with either Frontline or Evidence One is ‘Dark Horizons’, which features Tony Martin on vocals, and the great tracks just keep on coming. ‘The Crow’, ‘Let Me Die’ with it’s Braveheart Scottish voiceover and the ten minute epic ‘Wolfony’ which ends the Wolfpakk album, are all great big slabs of melodic metal, filled with stellar performances, great song writing and a massive sounding production.

Of course this album will be of interest to Voss/Sweeney fans but will I think sell more for who is guesting on it rather than anything else. Still it would be nice if Wolfpakk got to do some live gigs with the albums line-up.
