GOLDEN DECADE (1948-1957)

This unique CD edition documents the development of pop music in the years following World War II. The US charts form the basis of this edition  -  after all, America was trendsetter for European music tastes during the post-war period. Two thousand titles have been compiled chronologically on one hundred CDs  -  and almost five hundred of these titles reached the Number l spot.

RHYTHM & BLUES, COUNTRY & WESTERN, FOLK and ROCK & ROLL from the 1940s and 1950s all provided the necessary ingredients for the pop music we know today.

It was a characteristic peculiar to America that the charts were seperated into the different music categories of Rhythm & Blues, Country & Western and Pop, many titles were to be found simultaneously in the different charts, albeit at different positions. During the 1950s this overlapping increased continually, providing irrefutable proof of the rapidly developing fusion of music styles  -  although these styles were initially quite different from each other.

With this edition you can relive the great musical moments captured by established artists during the decade and the winding down of the careers of major stars like Bing Crosby, Hank Williams, Wynonie Harris, Ruth Brown and Dinah Shore etc. The early days of newcomers like Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Connie Francis and Wanda Jackson etc are just as interesting  -  these up-and-coming artists also started delivering hits. It was the protagonists of  this GOLDEN DECADE that made an essential contribution to pop music as we know it today, and who helped create an Independent youth culture in an almost revolutionary fashion in the process.

Charts had been chronicled in the USA ever since 1890. Reliable charts first started being compiled in Great Britain as of 1990 but there was no specific British music trend at the time. Consequently, it was not surprising that a large number of American artists managed to make their way into the English charts  -  a development most certainly supported by the common native language. English musicians frequently appeared in the British charts with cover versions of American originals and things first started changing in the late 1950s, gaining momentum during the 1960s when British artists like Cliff  Richard, Beatles and the Rolling Stones started taking the American market by storm with their own special brand of music.
