This is probably the best-known of all the music by the ‘Red Priest’, Antonio Vivaldi. Red, by the way, refers to his hair, not his politics, although the youn Vivaldi brothers were frequently in trouble with the local police in Venice. Vivaldi taugh at a school for girls, the Pietà in Venice, where he had to create music for his pupils to perform. In 1725 he published a dozen concertos (‘The Trial Between Harmony and Invention’) scored for violin (His own instrument) or oboe and small ensemble. In the score he prefaced each of the first four with a sonnet he wrote himself, devoted the seasons of the year. These four concertos, usually performed as a separate group, are the wonderful ‘Four Seasons’ - musical scene-painting at its most vivid!
