The Stunt Man [1980] [DVD] R2 2-disc edition

A Vietnam vet is on the run and accidentally ends on a film set where he kills the leading stunt man. But the director, in order to keep him away from the police, offers the man an ultimatum - to take the place of the stuntman. Peter O'Toole was nominated for an Oscar.

This 2-disc special edition couples a good transfer of the original film with a feature-length documentary in which director Richard Rush narrates "The Sinister Saga of the Making of The Stunt Man" -- which is well worth watching, for anyone wanting a glimpse into the history and internal politics of the Hollywood film industry. It also features more recent interviews with Rush, Peter O'Toole, Barbara Hershey, Steve Railsback and others involved in the production, which was clearly a labor of love for all of them.

The Stunt Man is unique in its seamless blend of action movie, comedy, drama and satire, and one of the best film treatments of the perennial theme of illusion and reality. Rush's direction is imaginative without being obtrusive, and the performances by Hershey, Railsback and especially O'Toole are superb. The story (co-written by Rush) is one of those that keeps you off balance when you see it for the first time -- is the fugitive stunt man's paranoia justified or not? -- and the script continues to delight on second and third viewing. This is one of the best films to come out of that period in the 1970s when Americans found they no longer had to go to an "art house" for innovative and original film fare. And it works almost as well today as it did then.

I would only point to two minor problems with this edition. First, it would have been nice to provide a version of the film that incorporates the deleted scene shown and discussed by Rush on disc 2. It's an excellent scene and would add something to the film as a whole, and the reasons it was cut (as given by Rush) are no longer salient. The other problem is with the packaging: Disc 1 of the first copy i received from Amazon had broken loose and banged around in the case so much that it was unplayable. It was promptly replaced by Amazon, and although disc 1 had also broken loose in the replacement copy, it played perfectly this time.
