Under Siege [DVD] Steven Seagal

Superbly original hostage action aboard and ageing US Navy dreadnought about to be decommissioned. However, the ship hasn’t reached harbour yet and is fully crewed and, dangerously, fully armed. A helicopter lands to throw the captain and crew a farewell party they will never forget. Except that a bitter senior officer and an even more embittered and betrayed special ops agent have assembled a deadly squad with an even deadlier lan to steal and sell the ships missiles, with the help of a stolen North Korean submarine. It sounds very far-fetched, but the rough and ready, gritty backdrop and less than all-star cast make for a surprisingly believable ocean caper. The action scenes are fast and at times brutal, with an interesting variety of weapons from a throwing knife to a yellow steel girder. When the SEAL rescue team is blown from the sky it’s down to Segal and his hastily assembled band of resistance (including a Playboy centrefold) to save the day, and Honolulu. The ending scenes feel a bit rushed, and the last third of the film (after the SEAL team dies) does unravel somewhat as events lead to the inevitable downfall of the villains. However, all in all you end the film bouyed up (pun intended). The sequel (set on a train) is pretty good too.
