STORM: THE STORY SO FAR From a satellite space-station high above the planet Jupiter, an astronaut named Storm launches himself in an exploratory spacecraft to penetrate the secrets of Jupiter's mysterious Red Spot. The spacecraft is caught up in a giant cyclone at the heart of the Red Spot and the buffeting by the tremendous winds there causes Storm to lose consciousness. When he comes to there is no sign of the satellite and only silence on the radio. Puzzled but unde- terred, Storm places himself in suspended animation and begins the long journey home to Earth, not realizing that he has been flung into the far future. He finds the planet drastically altered, with the surface world a harsh, icy panorama lack- ing warmth and oxygen. But descending into what had once been the basin of the Atlantic Ocean, he finds a lush, tropical landscape, peopled by savage barbarians. They take Storm to their leader, Ghast, who refuses to believe Storm's story and has him flung into jail, believing him to be a spy from the other side of the Great Wall that divides the under- ground world. In prison, Storm meets Ember, a beautiful girl prisoner from Tome, the land on the other side of the wall. With the aid of Kiley, a com- patriot of Ember's, they escape captivity but are swiftly pursued by Ghast and his men. In the course of the chase, Kiley is killed, as are all the pursuers but Ghast, who follows Storm and Ember into the underground chamber that holds the secrets of the Underground World. Here they meet the Mandroid, an old man who tells them that the Great Wall had once been a dam, harnessing the power of the Atlantic Ocean for a great civilisation that fell into ruin when the Ocean drained away. In the course of a fight, Ghast activates the machine designed to return the Ocean waters, and he is drowned in the flood. The Man- droid is revealed to be merely a hologram, as Storm and Ember escape the deluge on a raft, sailing into the future of a brand-new world. These events occurred in the first Storm book, The Deep World, which is now no longer available. DON LAWRENCE has been drawing comics since the 1950s, when he worked on the Marvelman and Range Rider strips. In the sixties, he was commissioned to draw The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire, written by British SF author Mike Butterworth, and the strip was an enormous success in Europe as well as England. As a result, Don met the Dutch writer Martin Lode- wijk, and together they created the character of Storm. MARTIN LODEWIJK was unable to write the first episode due to other commitments, so British SF writer Philip M. Dunn wrote the story, The Deep World. Martin returned to the strip with this volume, The Last Fighter and is currently con tinuing Storm's adventures in The Chronicles of Pandarve. Volume One, The Pirates of Pandarve, will be published shortly. Published by Titan Books Ltd, 58 St Giles High St, London WC2H 8LH, England.
