David Pollock (Gregory Peck) has been called to Oxford as an expert in the field of ancient characters. One day, the Prime Minister of an Arab country approaches the professor as he fears a plot against himself, whose details seem to be encrypted in ancient Hittite cuneiform writing. Pollock is said to work on their decryption in the London villa of the shipowner, Beshraavi, where the characters are located. Instead, he is apprehended by Beshraavi. Yazmin (Sophia Loren), the beautiful and mysterious player of the shipowner, warns him of his plans. So Pollock quickly finds that he has fallen between the fronts of an agent feud.
