“Basket Case” is another one of those films that people either adore or despise, so rather than review the movie (which is definitely worth a look if you enjoy zany low budget exploitation films) I am reviewing the overall quality of the presentation of this Blu-ray edition.
This Arrow Film limited edition is packed full of special features which are very informative and in some cases quite funny as well. I kept myself entertained for nearly an hour just watching special features before I got around to rewatching the movie. I am actually impressed that they fit so much on this disc.
As for the film itself, this restoration from the original negative is sharp and clear, even if the colors seem just a bit muted. But then, one needs to remember that this was shot on 16mm film more than 35 years ago. It is certainly less murky than the majority of home video releases that fans were subjected to throughout the 80s and 90s. A few reviews here complained about the picture, but I think the picture is excellent and looks far better than such a low budget film from 1982 has a right to look.
In addition to improved picture quality, I found that the sound was tremendously improved over previous versions in which I heard a lot of hiss and had trouble understanding bits of dialogue. Yeah, it’s mono, but I don’t really care about that if I can everything clearly. I did not need to watch with subtitles this time.
Seriously, the only quibble that I have is that this “limited edition” doesn’t have the same sturdy slip box, lobby cards. posters or generous sized booklets as other Arrow limited editions. The slip cover is nice, but not much more substantial than those that come with mainstream releases. The only thing here can be considered exclusive to this edition is a meager 26 page booklet that is interesting but nothing extraordinary.
To summarize, this edition offers great picture, clear sound and a plethora of special features. The packaging is just slightly above average, but at it’s current price of less than $25 it is a worthwhile acquisition for fans. I highly recommend it and consider it to be the most definitive edition available of this cult classic. (4 & 1/2 stars)
