?Commentary?
I have consistently made films centered on the themes of men and women. After much reflection, I find myself—inevitably—obsessed with the relationship between men and women. It is a subject I wish to pursue deeply.
I have now undertaken the task of filming The Beast in the Shadows (*Inj?*), the greatest novella by Edogawa Rampo, known as the father of Japanese detective fiction.
Samurai action films were the dream of my boyhood, while detective films were the dream of my youth. Now, standing on the verge of realizing that dream, I feel a mix of trepidation and complex emotions.
Yet, I resolved to challenge the many masterpieces created by my predecessors because I believe the central theme of The Beast in the Shadows is, quite simply, the battle between man and woman.
I hope to create an entertaining film. —Director's Statement: Tai Kato (from the film pamphlet)—
?Story?
Detective novelist Koichiro Samukawa meets Shizuko Oyamada, a married woman with a distinct red welt on the nape of her neck. Shizuko is being blackmailed by the mystery writer Harudoro Oe. When Samukawa investigates the space above the ceiling at the Oyamada residence, he discovers traces of someone having crawled about, along with a dropped decorative button. Samukawa sets out to track down Shunde. Then, a second threatening letter arrives; true to its warning, the body of Shizuko’s husband, Rokuro, is found floating near a Sumida River boat landing, the victim of drowning...
