"he story of a real-life murder, the motive behind it, the way the house of cards the killers built quickly came tumbling down...and, of course, a true crime classic. We never actually see the murder itself, not even in flashback--director Richard Fleischer offers us instead a glimpse into the perpetrators' twisted psyches, and then spends the rest of the film on the crime's aftermath. The black-and-white cinematography is terrific, the suspense is palpable, and Bradford Dillman and Dean Stockwell as the Leopold and Loeb characters are on point from start to finish. The real star, however, is Orson Welles as the celebrated lawyer recruited to represent the boys at trial; only in his 40s at the time but carrying himself with the bone-deep weariness of a man much older (he wears his exhaustion like a second skin), he turns in one of the most pitch-perfect, finely-calibrated performances of his career; the long closing argument he delivers as the trial draws to its conclusion comes across as nothing less than a master class in acting. If you see this movie for no other reason, see it for Welles, and see it for that speech. "Compulsion" is not to be missed."
