Roger Cormanin postapokalyptinen scifi-jännäri. Englantilainen myyntikasetti.
Day the World Ended is a 1955 American independently made black-and-white post-apocalyptic science fiction film, produced and directed by Roger Corman, that stars Richard Denning, Lori Nelson, Adele Jergens, Paul Birchand Mike Connors. Chet Huntley of NBC, later of The Huntley-Brinkley Report, served as the film's narrator. It was released by American Releasing Corporation (later American International Pictures) on December 8, 1955[1] as a double feature with The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues.
The film's story centers on a heroic scientist who, with a small band of other survivors, faces off against a radioactive mutation following an atomic war that appears to have destroyed most of human civilization.
Early Roger Corman cheapie focusing on a group of people holing up in a house following some kind of radioactive apocalypse. There's a touch of Night of the Living Dead about the way things pan out - drama between a group of varied characters while a larger story plays outside the central location. The dynamics between the survivors makes up the backbone of the film and keeps things ticking over for the most part, though it does feel a bit trite in places. Naturally the survivors end up becoming just as big a threat to each other as the external forces. There's some discussion of the science of radiation; one character talks about mutations in animals following an H-bomb test and this of course manifests in a ridiculous looking rubber suit monster that turns up towards the end. The whole concept never really feels fully realised, though obviously budgetary constraints would have played a factor in that. For what it is, The Day the World Ended is a compelling little drama that doesn't outstay its welcome with a 79 minute runtime.
