Eschewing lycra in favour of shorts and sandals, he and friends roll along at ten miles an hour the perfect way, as he says, to explore rural France. Each ride takes about a week, with frequent pauses to taste wine, swim in a river, and investigate subjects as varied as lace making, pelota, Roquefort, Flaubert and the pilgrimage to Compostela.
