"I saw this for the first time when I was 14. It was probably the oldest film I'd ever seen at the time, and also for many years afterwards. I remember being really disturbed. I was wondering for days how they created these special effects in 1932. But they aren't special effects - I couldn't accept that at the time. I see it now as one of the greatest horror films ever made, and not because the "freaks" are horrific. It's Tod Browning's amazing direction - possibly his greatest effort - that makes the film so frightening. The wedding feast is one of the great set pieces in film history. The stormy climax is chilling, as is the result of the "freaks'" attack. "
