"Few players have dominated tennis like Fred Perry. His run of three successive Wimbledon titles from 1934 to 1936 ended not because he was beaten, but because he was benned. Turning pro to tour the USA with Vines and Tilden and to found the men's professional circuit. Perry was lost to the amateur game. His supreme fitness and lethal forehand had helped Britain to four consecutive Davis Cup victories. When he left for America, Britain lost the Cup and has never won it since; nor has a British man won a major singles title. The All England Club has commemorated the fiftieth anniversany of his first Wimbledon triumph by erecting a statue and renaming gates in his honour."
