A coming-of-age literary masterpiece depicting the common problems faced by working women, centering on three close friends who work at the same department store!

Kimiko, Setsuko, and Sayuri are close friends who graduated from the same high school and joined the Marutaka Department Store in Tokyo.

Kimiko works in the kimono department, Setsuko in the food department, and Sayuri as an elevator operator. Although they work in different departments, they use their short breaks to talk about their troubles.

Kimiko, who is serious but strong-willed, believes that women should be equal to men.

Therefore, she cannot tolerate the contemptuous attitude that the new employee, Makoto Ubukata, shows towards women at every turn.

Kimiko often clashes with Ubukata, but their relationship eventually develops into love.

Setsuko, a very domestic woman, vaguely seeks fulfillment in her life and, while working, meets Takei, a visiting employee of a food company.

Setsuko gradually falls in love with Takei, a remarkably steady young man for her age.

Sayuri, on the other hand, believes in freely enjoying romance and, as soon as the store closes, puts on heavy makeup and heads out into the night.

Eventually, she meets Hata, a married man in the advertising department. Three different love stories unfold.
