Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen founded Hot Tuna as a Jefferson Airplane side project in 1969, when Grace Slickwas recovering from throat node surgery that had left her unable to perform. They made up a trio with the harmonica player Will Scarlett (3). For early performances, Paul Kantnerand the drummer Joey Covington joined in. In the 1970s, Hot Tuna became a full-time band, and the style became more rock oriented. For their second LP, fiddler Papa John Creachand drummer Sammy Piazza joined the band. Later, the band changed to a power trio with Bob Steeler on drums.
