Routledge 1963/2010. Uudenveroinen 582 sivua. Tieteenfilosofian monumentti.

Karl Popper's theory of conjectures and refutations posits that scientific knowledge grows through trial and error. Instead of verifying theories, scientists propose bold conjectures (guesses) and subject them to rigorous attempts at refutation (falsification). Theories that survive become our best provisional knowledge, though they remain permanently unproven. [1, 2]

This philosophy, heavily detailed in his seminal 1963 book, Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge, reshaped the modern understanding of the scientific method.

Key Pillars of Popper's Philosophy

  • The Demarcation Problem: Popper argued the defining feature of a true scientific theory is that it is inherently falsifiable. A theory is only "good" if it forbids certain things from happening, meaning there is a conceivable test that could prove it wrong. If a theory cannot be refuted by any event, it is unscientific or metaphysical. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • No Such Thing as Induction: Popper rejected the idea that science works by observing repeated instances to establish a universal truth (e.g., seeing thousands of white swans doesn't "prove" all swans are white). Instead, scientists leap to bold conjectures and test them. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

  • The Problem of Verification: It is incredibly easy to find confirmations or evidence for any theory if you look hard enough. Therefore, confirmations only count if they are the result of "risky" predictions that could have completely shattered the theory. [1]

  • Approaching the Truth: When a theory is refuted, it isn't just a failure; it is a vital step forward. By learning from our mistakes, we eliminate false ideas and edge closer to objective truth, even if we can never definitively say we "know" for certain. [1]

This method of conjecture and refutation is not limited to lab settings. Popper applied it broadly to human knowledge, arguing that political structures, societal traditions, and even everyday problem-solving evolve through the exact same evolutionary process of proposing tentative solutions and ruthlessly criticizing them.
