”Kevin Ayers was a melodic genius and cheeky lyricist, a natural, unreconstructed hippie who looked at life from the bottom of a wine bottle. Odd Ditties is an essential album for Ayers fans, as it collects choice singles, B-sides, and previously unreleased songs together in one concise package. Ayers' most creative solo work covered the Joy of a Toy through Bananamour years, so it's no surprise the best songs here are his earliest. Of particular note is the gorgeous "Gemini Child" and French-sung "Jolie Madame." Also of note are "Singing a Song in the Morning" (Syd Barrett was on guitar on an alternate version), "Soon, Soon, Soon," "Stars," and "Puis Je?" (a French-language "May I"). The remainder will be familiar to those who have Ayers' albums; some are the bon vivant Caribbean, uh, "ditties" that he had such an affinity for.”
