Juonta : After a devastating nuclear war, the remains of civilization live in the ruins of the metropolises. There are strict emergency laws and the military is developing artificial life forms for “population control”. The scrap collector Mo (Dylan McDermott) does not know what he is getting into when he buys the head of a humanoid robot and gives it to his artist friend Jill (Stacey Travis) for sculpture welding. Because this is part of the secret project M.A.R.K-13, a self-regenerating combat drone! Awakens to new life, the Android reassembles independently and launches its deadly program. An unequal struggle for survival begins.
With his feature debut HARDWARE, South African-born Richard Stanley (DUST DEVIL) established himself as an outstanding genre stylist: like James Cameron at the original TERMINATOR, he created a not only visually overwhelming cyberpunk apocalypse about the confrontation of humans and superior future machine with low-budget freedom. HEAVY METAL also reigns among the guest stars: Lemmy from MOTÖRHEAD and Iggy Pop, who can be heard in the original as the voice of the anarchist radio host “Angry” Bob. “As fearsome as ALIEN, as disturbing as in 1984,” the industry magazine “Us Magazine” summarized when it appeared.
