Set against the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion, two Osaka families navigate the radical social shifts of the early Meiji Era. As the merchant class ascends to economic prominence, the former samurai class faces a steady decline in status and traditional structure.
In the Meiji-era Semba district of Osaka, where the light snow melts in the lamplight, O-Mio weeps over a past love.
Amidst the vibrant colors of the era, a beautiful and elegant lyricism unfolds, centered around one lovely woman.
O-Mio (Ranko Hanai) lived a comfortable life as the daughter of the Hyogoya shipping company in Semba, Osaka. Her father, Jihei (Eitaro Shindo), was desperate to increase the company's profits by riding the wave of the times.
One day, O-Mio and her fiancé, Sakuji (Jun Fujio), helped O-Shino (Hisako Yamane) who was in trouble, and through that connection, O-Shino came to live with O-Mio. O-Shino, with her kind and lovely nature, adored Mio as an older sister.
O-Shino's father, Kohei Takuma (Kuroten Takado), a fallen samurai, lived a meager life with his wife, Osoyo (Tomoko Ito), making a living through piecework. Sakuji learns that Osoyo is Omi's birth mother and introduces her to Omi, but Omi treats Osoyo coldly.
She then chases Oshino out of the house after learning she is her blood sister and entrusts her to Sakuji...
*At the time, no Meiji-era streetscapes remained in Osaka, so location shooting was carried out in the Ise region, including Kuwana-tsu, Uji, Yokkaichi, and Yamada. The town of Senba was created as an open set.
