Fifty years of staking one’s life on a humble shogi piece! A moving epic woven together by a hit song!
A fighting spirit burns in the hand that moves the pieces. A life dedicated entirely to the game of shogi—a journey defined by the love of a devoted wife, Koharu!!
Sankichi Sakata is a sandal-maker living in a cramped tenement in Tennoji. Though uneducated and illiterate—knowing only the characters inscribed on shogi pieces—he possesses a genius-level talent for the game, consistently winning every amateur tournament he enters. Yet, his obsession comes at a cost: he once sold his wife Koharu’s only fine kimono just to cover the entry fee for a tournament. Left to support their young daughter through meager day labor, Koharu bears an immeasurable burden. One day, after Sankichi defeats a series of ranked players in a tournament against professionals, he is offered a chance to become a professional shogi player. Though initially hesitant, Koharu realizes that since shogi is her husband’s only true gift, she must stand by him and share in the hardships that lie ahead. Ten years later, having become an undefeated force in the Kansai region and reaching the rank of 7-dan, Sankichi challenges the Kanto champion, Sekimura (8-dan), for the national title. With the series tied at two wins apiece, the match reaches a fateful fifth and final game... Directed by the master filmmaker Daisuke Ito and featuring a brilliant performance by lead actor Rentaro Mikuni, this is the third cinematic adaptation of Shuji Hojo’s Osho (The King). The turbulent life and eccentric behavior of the genius player Sankichi Sakata—spanning the fifteen years leading up to the death of his wife, Koharu—are brought to life in a dramatic fashion, underscored by the iconic, record-breaking hit song by Hideo Murata.
