Deep Purple hajosi 1976. Pian sen jälkeen Jon Lord ja Ian Paice päättivät perustaa uuden bändin Tony Ashtonin kanssa. Ja hyvin pian bändi oli hajonnut. Kitaristi Bernie Marsden siirtyi nopeasti kolmannen ex-Deep Purple miehen David Coverdale perustamaan Whitesnakeen. Ja hyvin pian sekä Lord (1978) että Paice (1979) siirtyivät sinne tahoillaan.
