Frank Henenlotter’s Sexy Shockers From the Vaults -sarjan jalokivi, joka onkin törkyhiili. Luultavasti maailman huonoin elokuva, ”a psychic freakout from the underground”, jossa psykedeeliset noitakuviot (”transetheric vision”), karmea näytteleminen ilman suoraa ääntä (multi-voiceover on tietysti ”telepaattista dialogia) ja uskomattoman veltot seksikohdat (”let’s fantasy fuck now”) ovat sisältö yhdessä yhä uudestaan rokkaavan psych-teemabiisin kanssa. Jopa Henenlotter itse sanoo: ”one-of-a-kind abomination). Järki menee ja hulluus tulee katsoessa. Vuodelta 1972 mutta jostain Saturnuksen tuolta puolen.

Occult Sleaze From the Regional Fringe

PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH is one of those regional exploitation oddities that feels less like a properly assembled movie than a transmission from some vanished fringe universe.

Though it turned up on triple bills at San Francisco-area drive-ins in the summer of 1974, the clearest theatrical record points to an earlier launch, with a New Orleans premiere on March 23, 1973, followed by regional bookings including Colorado Springs that May. Its later circulation through Clamil after the initial Emerson Films release only reinforces its status as a marginal grindhouse artifact that drifted through secondary distribution rather than receiving any conventional national rollout.

The film appears to have been the only feature made by "Victor Luminera," a pseudonym later identified as Lawrence Milton Boren. Boren was tied to the World of Tomorrow Foundation, styled himself "Dr. Destiny," and seems to have come not from any established film background but from a world of esoteric self-invention, New Age mysticism, and fringe metaphysics. Earlier newspaper items also linked him and his foundation to a long-gestating outer-space stage or screen project called "From Venus with Love," suggesting that PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH emerged from a preexisting obsession with futurism, altered consciousness, and occult fantasy.

Made for New Art Films, the picture credits "Victor Luminera" with writing, directing, and music, while Larry Milton is associated with photography, special effects, and in some accounts editing; Milton Lawrence is listed as executive producer. The distributor, Emerson Films, was a small Los Angeles independent under Joseph Emerson, a grindhouse-era company that specialized in getting disreputable, cheap, and often very strange movies into theaters. Emerson also handled dreck like The Creation of the Humanoids, Manos: The Hands of Fate, Monstrosity, and What Am I Bid?, making it a natural home for something as eccentric and commercially wayward as this.

PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH is astonishingly crude and handmade. There is no real synchronized dialogue in the usual sense. Instead, the film unfolds through voice over narration, stock footage, layered psychedelic superimposition, and repeated musical cues, including a custom theme song ("Beware of the 4D witch...").

The story centers on Cindy, a sexually repressed young woman or novice witch who comes into psychic contact with Abigail, an ancestor executed in Salem. Abigail promises erotic fulfillment without the loss of virginity and draws Cindy into increasingly bizarre astral-sex episodes that spiral into exploitation, occult spectacle, and moral panic.

A plot description only goes so far, because the movie plays less like a structured horror film than a collision of sexploitation, occult cinema, pseudo-educational warning picture, and psychedelic collage. It occupies that fascinating zone of outsider cinema where the avant-garde and the absurdly accidental become hard to separate.

Part of the film's cult appeal lies in just how deranged its imagery and erotic logic become. Cindy's search for release leads her through encounters with herself, a gay neighbor, a rubber snake, a corpse, and even Dracula, turning the picture into a kind of experimental skull-splitter that inspires descriptions less like criticism than stunned testimony.

Decades later, PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH found an audience consisting of psychotronic devotees, bad-movie connoisseurs, and seekers of genuine outsider art. Something Weird Video rescued it from obscurity, and by 2006 it had been paired on DVD with Monster A-Go Go, securing its afterlife as a cult curio. Whatever its original intentions, the film now survives as a ragged, hypnotic artifact of early-Seventies exploitation, hovering somewhere between witchcraft melodrama, sex freakout, and accidental experimental cinema.
