Hackett recorded the album during a break in group activity in mid-1975 and used guest musicians, including Genesis bassist Mike Rutherford and drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, to play on the record. It has a loose concept with the title and lyrics of each track inspired by a Tarot card.

Steve Hackett’s solo debut remains a progressive rock classic. It has a tasteful symphonic progressive sound very much in the vein of the classic era of Genesis. “Voyage Of The Acolyte” was released while he was still in the group. The music is very compact and sophisticated and a certain Genesis’ sound is evident on the entire album. So, and mainly because of that, many consider “Voyage Of The Acolyte” one of Genesis’ lost albums.

Steve Hackett became the first member of Genesis to release a solo album, and what an album! Mixing progressive rock with the fiery energy of fusion, Voyage of the Acolyte is a trip unlike any other in the Genesis family tree. Over the years, Hackett has remained the most faithful steward of Genesis’ progressive roots, and Voyage is his finest hour.
