Private detective Philip Marlowe (Bogart) is hired by the wealthy and ailing General Sternwood to investigate a blackmail case involving his wild younger daughter Carmen. As Marlowe digs deeper, he encounters a tangled web of deception, murder, and seduction. The older daughter, Vivian Rutledge (Bacall), adds further intrigue as Marlowe suspects she knows more than she lets on.

The investigation leads Marlowe through Los Angeles's underworld, involving shady book dealers, missing persons, and a series of double-crosses. The film is known for its complex plot, sharp dialogue, and atmospheric tension — hallmarks of the noir genre.
