The Flaming Lips on yhdysvaltalainen yhtye, joka kuuluu tunnustetuimpiin kokeellisen vaihtoehtorockin esiintyjiin. The Flaming Lipsistä sanotaan, että he ovat rikkoneet kaksi rock-myyttiä: pitää olla nuori ja ottaa itsensä vakavasti. Yhtyeen pitkä ura on kirjava ja sen punaisena lankana on kyltymätön kokeilunhalu ja vilpitön rakkaus musiikkiin ja sen kuulijoihin. Suurimman läpimurtonsa yhtye teki vasta kuutisentoista vuotta perustamisensa jälkeen julkaistuaan The Soft Bulletinin (1999), jopa 1990-luvun merkittävimpiin kuuluvaksi ylistetyn albumin. The Flaming Lips tunnetaan omasta kuvastostaan, jossa Jeesus, joulu, robotit, Disney sekä metafyysisesti taistelevat ja vertavuotavat ihmiset kohtaavat toisensa - ulkoavaruudessa.

The Flaming Lips on vieraillut kaksi kertaa Suomessa, vuonna 2007 Ruisrockissa ja 2009 Pitkässä Kuumassa Kesässä.

Transmissions from the Satellite Heart is The Flaming Lips' sixth album, released in 1993. Its fourth track, "She Don't Use Jelly", is notable for being The Flaming Lips' first charting radio hit, after its video was featured on the MTV show Beavis and Butt-Head, nearly a year after the album's release. "Turn It On" was also a moderately-successful single, and also had two different music videos, one of which was shot at a laundromat. The album marked the departure of Jonathan Donahue (to Mercury Rev) and Nathan Roberts, and the addition of guitarist Ronald Jones and drummer Steven Drozd.

The EP Due to High Expectations... The Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles for Your Balloons was released the following year to promote the album and featured live versions of "Chewin the Apple of Your Eye" and "Slow•Nerve•Action". The EP's cover art was also similar to that of Transmissions from the Satellite Heart.

With the exception of She Don't Use Jelly, most songs from this album have rarely been attempted live since Ronald Jones's departure in 1996. On September 14, 2014, all the songs were played live for the first time ever.
