BLU-RAY: Hsin Yao's acclaimed black-and-white short film The Great Buddha was crowned Best Short Film at the 2015 Taipei Film Festival. Two years later, the director expands the suspense story into his first narrative feature The Great Buddha+. Produced and lensed by Chung Mong Hong, the film won five awards at the Golden Horse Film Awards, including Best New Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor for Bamboo Chen. Mostly presented in black and white with select dashes of color, The Great Buddha+ weaves an unpredictable satire-laden black comedy of crime and misadventure.
Pickle (Cres Chuang) barely makes ends meet working as a night-shift security guard at a bronze statue factory. He and his buddy Belly Button (Bamboo Chen), a recycling collector by day, pass the hours by flipping through adult magazines and watching TV in the security room. When the TV breaks down, the two decide to watch something else: their sleazy boss's (Leon Dai) salacious dash-cam footage. They accidentally come upon a dangerous secret that throws their lives into chaos and triggers a preposterous chain of events.

CD: In 2015, award-winning documentary filmmaker Huang Hsin Yao's acclaimed black-and-white short film The Great Buddha was crowned Best Short Film at the 2015 Taipei Film Festival. Two years later, the director retells the suspense story in his first feature drama about a large Buddha statue, a police officer, a corrupt statue factory boss, a poor man living on recycled materials and a mysterious woman.
Serving as the soundtrack producer, renowned Hakka musician Lin Sheng Xiang experiments with different sounds by blending various styles, such as folk, jazz and Taiwanese regional music. The soundtrack of The Great Buddha is mastered by German recording engineer Wolfgang Obrecht.
Taiwanese musician from the Hakka minority group. Influenced by traditional Hakka mountain songs and Western folk and rock ‘n’ roll. Formed his first band, ????? (Kuan-tsu [Guanzi] Music Pit), which became involved in the fight against a government plan to build a dam in his home place of Meinong.
In 1999, following some personnel changes, ????? changed its name to the Labor Exchange Band and began incorporating traditional instruments into their sound, including suona (a trumpet-like instrument) and Sheng Xiang’s yueqin (sometimes called a “moon guitar”) and sanxian (a three-string guitar-like instrument). Sheng Xiang also began writing songs with activist and poet Zhong Yongfeng.
In 2003, the Labor Exchange Band split up and a new group, Water3, was formed. Lin Sheng Xiang also started to release solo albums.

About The Film:
Underlining the gap between have-nots' lives and elites' world by switching between black and white and glamorous colors, THE GREAT BUDDHA+ vividly illustrates a corrupted village in rural southern Taiwan with memorable style, heartfelt empathy, and whimsical humor. Security guard Pickle and his trash collector friend Belly Button kill time together in night shifts watching the American-educated boss's dash-cam recordings of his various sexual encounters with women. Against the buddies’ will, something horrifying rather than erotic reveals.
“Humor, a perennial scarcity in the self-serious world of art-house cinema, is in pleasingly abundant supply in Taiwanese director Huang Hsin-yao’s The Great Buddha+”
— Jordan Cronk, Film Comment
“...the most important film from Taiwan since Yi Yi (Edward Yang).”
