The group was started with Howard, his wife Vestal, his sister Gussy and a bass singer circa 1946. Howard and Vestal became a duet in the early '50s. In the early '60's brothers Sam(tenor), Rusty(bass), (bass player and soloist) and son Rick (percussion) joined the group and they became The Happy Goodman Family. In a few years pianist Eddie Crook joined the group .
