Audio Commentary: Director Roman Polanski dives right into The Ninth Gate, discussing his encounter with the original novel ("The Club Dumas" by Arturo Pérez-Reverte), the evolution of the project, and his eventual production. He touches on the usual fare -- casting choices and aesthetic decisions -- but also candidly discusses the story's tone, his take on each performance, and the techniques used to shoot some of the more challenging sequences in the film. The commentary isn't mind-blowing by any stretch of the imagination, but it will satisfy Polanski purists looking to worm their way deeper into the controversy-laden director's brain.
Original Featurette (SD, 2 minutes): This all-too-short, non-anamorphic EPK affords little time to the director, his cast, or the production. It almost would have been better to get nothing at all than to be handed this poor excuse for a featurette.
Storyboard Selections: A simplistic text-based interface houses screenplay excerpts and storyboards for several scenes. However, backing out of the labyrinthine feature can be quite a chore -- I had to resort to the eject button to escape the first time around.
