The Stan Kenton Story is a comprehensive 4-CD box set released by Proper Records in 2000. It chronicles the first turbulent and influential decade of the bandleader's career from 1940 through the late 1940s, featuring 93 digitally remastered tracks and an extensive 48-page illustrated booklet. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Box Set Overview & Evolution
Disc One (The Early Years): Focuses on the establishment of the Kenton Era, featuring early theme songs and hits like "Artistry in Rhythm," "Eager Beaver," and vocal tracks with Anita O'Day. [1, 2]
Disc Two & Three (The Arranging Powerhouse): Highlights the sophisticated arrangements of Pete Rugolo and showcases prominent soloists and swing numbers. [1]
Disc Four (Progressive & Latin Jazz): Explores Kenton's transition into bold "Progressive Jazz" and Latin-tinged rhythms, contrasting crowd-pleasers like "The Peanut Vendor" with complex compositions by Bob Graettinger.

"Discographical note: Capitol transcriptions sessions were entirely separate from the phono dates. Titles were not awarded individual master numbers. Instead the "matrix" identifies the 16" lacquer and the number after the dash the track on that lacquer. Thus ET 292-2 means "Begin The Beguine" , was recorded on lacquer number 429 and the chosen take is the second track on this lacquer. More titles were recorded by session because the same level of perfection was not demanded as on phono dates, since transcription recordings were not intended for public sale, though in Kenton's case the difference in quality is minimal."
This compilation comes in a carboard boxset which contains the 4 CDs in individual cardboard sleeve, a 48-page booklet with detailed discography, liner notes in English and many photos, and also a 24-page booklet with Proper catalogue.
