Synopsis

The foster parent tears Shinz? and Hanakago apart

A magnificent flower of theatrical prowess blooms in Naniwa!

Eikichi Yamato (Rokuro Furukawa), a show promoter who has been receiving thunderous applause for his play about the First Sino-Japanese War at a theater in D?tonbori, boldly declares that his next production will also be Harada Shigeji's "The Breaking of the Genbu Gate," set during the First Sino-Japanese War.

The leading actor, Nakamura Shinz? (Kazuo Hasegawa), whose skill and popularity are soaring, has become complacent, and his reputation among those around him is not good. Eikichi, for the sake of art, tears Shinz? apart from the female Giday? performer, Takemoto Kary? (Isuzu Yamada). Enraged, Shinz? breaks ties with Eikichi and is bought by the Shintomi-za theater in Tokyo…

Set in Meiji-era Osaka, this is a geisha-themed film by director Mikio Naruse, following in the footsteps of "Tsuruhachi Tsurujir?" and "Uta Andon," starring Kazuo Hasegawa and Isuzu Yamada.
