netistä mielipidettä: Too 'concert hall' and 'modernist' for some rock fans. Too silly and incoherent for the music academics. I see everyone's point of view but happen to love Zappa's LSO albums (Vol 1 & 2), Yellow Shark and several ventures he made much earlier into the orchestral setting like on Lumpy Gravy and 200 Motels.
This, even after thirty years or so, still sits somewhere else. It's the same Frank I know and love, same language, same style of orchestration but somehow it feels rather cold for the most part. The fanfare section of Dupree's Paradise is a moment of relief from the unrelenting angularity and explosions of percussion. Naval Aviation In Art is double the length it was on Orchestral Favourites and all the better for it, brooding and ominous without resolution.
The busiest, fullest and most dense of Zappa's albums. If you like action you'll get it here. I wonder though, had he lived, in old age he may have found these pieces rather more busy than they need be. They're flashy, cartoon-eque but just perhaps...a bit much! There are other better orchestral Zappa albums out there.
