netistä: Weird German compilation, haphazardly thrown together to say the least. Someone must have just stuck a pin in the discographies of each band to come up with the tracklisting (unless some kind of subtle conceptual genius was at work and I've completely missed the point). Kicking off the Velvets disc with The Murder Mystery - yeah, that'll work!
The Mothers disc is the type of thing that drove Zappa mad - taking a load of tracks completely out of context from his early concept type albums.
The Velvet Underground are billed as 'featuring Nico' - yet, as noted, there are no songs from the first album they did together.
This is one strange beast to be sure. And as for that cheapo sleeve design .... ye gods.
Polydor/ Verve and MGM had no faith in the longevity of the music they issued by two of the greatest bands of the '60s so they heavily milked their back catalogues, quickly and clumsily, before they considered the kids would lose interest.
The person who compiled this album obviously knew nothing and cared even less about the music.
Despite this - I would love a copy of this compilation. Truly a thing of wonder.
