Product Description

A deeply moving masterpiece by the peerless director Sadao Yamanaka!

Set in a row house in the Fukagawa district of Edo. Matajuro Unno (Chojuro Kawarazaki), a masterless samurai, once again seeks a position through his patron Sanzaemon Mori (Kosaburo Tachibana) but fails to receive a favorable response. Meanwhile, Shinza the Barber (Kan'emon Nakamura), who lives next door, visits the merchant house Shirakoya to pawn his tools of the trade; after being treated with contempt, he impulsively kidnaps the merchant's daughter, Okoma (Noboru Kiritachi)...

This was the first film Sadao Yamanaka directed for P.C.L. after transitioning from screenwriter to director in 1932. He was meticulous about achieving realistic visuals, going so far as to construct a stone wall nearly 36 meters long for a single shot and building a row-house set that spanned the entire length of the soundstage. Although Yamanaka created 26 period films—all highly acclaimed—in a career spanning just five and a half years, he was conscripted for the Second Sino-Japanese War shortly after completing this film and died of illness in China. This film stands as his final work.
