In the province of Iga, there existed an heirloom known as the "Kokezaru-no-Tsubo" (Moss-Monkey Jar). Yagyu Tsushima-no-Kami, the lord of Yagyu Castle, learned a secret from his elderly retainer, Master Ippu-Sojo: a map indicating the location of a buried fortune of one million ryo was concealed within the jar's lacquerwork. Unfortunately, Tsushima-no-Kami had dismissed it as a mere antique and had already given it away as a wedding gift to his younger brother, Genzaburo, when the latter married into the Shiba family. Panicked, Tsushima-no-Kami plotted to retrieve the jar with his trusted retainer, Ko Dainoshin, whom he dispatched to Edo to find Genzaburo. Dainoshin arrived demanding the jar's return, but Genzaburo flatly refused; subsequently, at the behest of Genzaburo's wife, Hagino, the jar was sold to a scrap dealer. Dainoshin returned once more, offering one hundred ryo to acquire the jar. Suspicious as to why his stingy brother would offer such a large sum, Genzaburo beat the truth out of Dainoshin, forcing him to confess the jar's secret. By this time, however, the jar had changed hands repeatedly and ended up being used as a goldfish bowl by Chobian, the young son of a man named Shichibei. Shichibei had been frequenting an archery range run by a woman named Ofuji—with whom he had fallen in love—but was killed by local yakuza over a trivial matter. Tange Sazen, a bodyguard at the range, found himself looking after the orphaned Chobian alongside Ofuji, who disliked children. Meanwhile, unable to locate the jar, Genzaburo began frequenting the archery range, where he encountered Sazen and Chobian.
