Hard Labor is the eighth studio album by American rock band Three Dog Night, released in 1974. For this album, the band replaced long-time producer Richard Podolor with Jimmy Ienner, who was known for his production work with the Raspberries.[1]

Cover artwork

The original album cover, depicting the birth of a record album, was deemed too controversial and was first included with a manila file folder covering most of the cover. This was soon reworked with a huge Band-Aid covering the "birth". Subsequent printings had the Band-Aid printed directly on the cover. The packaging also includes an attached "birth record sheet" for the album. The CD reissue by MCA Records in the 1990s restored the cover to its original look showing the record.

AllMusic StarStar[2]

Circus Raves Ear Ear[3]

Tom Von Malder of the Daily Herald called Hard Labor the band's finest record up to that point, applauding the production and finding the choice of songs representing the band at "its most competent, most mature level". Malder singled out "The Show Must Go On" and "I'd Be So Happy" as its two best, and "almost perfect", songs.[1] Cash Box called Ienner's production "immaculate as always" and wrote that the album was marked by "mood changes both subtle and obvious", making it a "fantastic study in theatrical and musical contrast".[4] Billboard found the track listing a "fine mix of material" and wrote that the instrumental section was "tight and almost perfect".[5]

Circus Raves writer Jon Tiven gave the record "two ears"—indicating an album to "listen to ... 'til the grooves grow old" and wrote that the band "are the best when they're transforming half-arsed songs into good ones, but they run into trouble when the original rendition of the tune was fine in the first place (e.g. 'The Show Must Go On')."[3] Writing retrospectively, Joseph McCombs of AllMusic felt that the album's preference for songs with solo vocals rather than the group's previous use of harmonies led to the band "los[ing] much of their soul and spirit" and saw the album as "show[ing] the growing cracks in the band's armor". Like Malder, McCombs found "I'd Be So Happy" and "The Show Must Go On" the highlights of the album.[2]

Three Dog Night on yhdysvaltalainen vuonna 1968 perustettu rockyhtye. Parhaiten yhtyeen tuotannosta tunnetaan sen esittämät hittikappaleet "Joy to the World", "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)", "Black and White" sekä "Never Been to Spain".[1][2]

Historia

Tuottajana toiminut Danny Hutton esitti vuonna 1967 ystävälleen Cory Wellsille idean perustaa kolmen vokalistin ryhmä. He värväsivät mukaan yhteisen ystävänsä Chuck Negronin. Yhdessä he levyttivät jonkusen singlen, mutta ne eivät kummemmin menestyneet. Päädyttiin siihen että yhtyeelle värvätään taustabändi. Three Dog Nightsiin liittyivät kitaristi Mike Allsup, kosketinsoittaja Jimmy Greenspoon, basisti Joe Schermie sekä rumpali Floyd Sneed.

Greenspoon kuoli maaliskuussa 2015.[5]

Yhtyeen laulajilla oli tapana ottaa lead-osuudet vuoroittain vastuulleen. Cory Wells esimerkiksi hoitaa laulun kappaleilla “Eli's Coming”, “Never Been to Spain” sekä ykkössijan listoilla saaneella “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”.

Hittikappaleet

Three Dog Nightin uraan mahtuu 21 hittisingleä, joista 11 pääsi Top Ten -listalle.

Yhtyeen suurin ykköshitti 1971 oli Hoyt Axtonin säveltämä "Joy to the World", joka alkaa legendaarisilla sanoilla Jeremiah was a bullfrog...[6][2] Vuonna 1970 julkaistu kappale on sen jälkeen ilmestynyt lukuisina cover-versioina, myös suomeksi.[7] Kappale päätyi muun muassa elokuviin Sisärengas ja Forrest Gump.[6][8] Vuosina 1969–70 Axton kiersi Three Dog Nightnin mukana heidän lämmittelijänään.[6]

Toisen listaykkösen Three Dog Night sai Randy Newmanin alun perin Eric Burdonille säveltämästä ja Burdonin 1966 esittämästä "Mama Told Me Not to Come", sekin vuonna 1970.[2][9] Kolmas ykkössija tuli vuonna 1972 kappaleella "Black and White", jonka sanoma on, että ihminen on yhtä ihonväristä riippumatta.[2][1][10][11]

Muita Top Ten -sijoille päässeitä kappaleita ovat "Shambala" (säv. Daniel Moore, 3. sija 1973), "The Show Must Go On" (säv. Leo Sayer, 4. sija 1974), "Easy to Be Hard" (säv. MacDermot-Ragni-Rado, 4. sija 1969), "An Old Fashioned Love Song" (säv. Paul Williams, 4. sija 1971), “Never Been to Spain” (säv. Axton, 5. sija 1972), "Liar" (säv. Russ Ballard, 7. sija 1971) ja "Eli's Coming" (säv. Laura Nyro, 10. sija 1969).[1][2][12]

Yhtyeen nimen alkuperä

Yhtyeen laulaja Danny Huttonin tyttöystävän, näyttelijä June Fairchildin, sanotaan ehdottaneen bändille nimeä Three Dog Night. Jos mennään pakkasen puolelle, tarvitaan jo kolme koiraa.[13][14] (Fairchild esiintyi muun muassa Cheech & Chong -elokuvassa Up in Smoke.)[13]
